Internal Medicine Resident
Hosp Universitario Dr R Arnau
My name is Ubaldo R. Madera Sanchez M.D., Internal Medicine Resident at the Universidad Central del Caribe Program, Puerto Rico. I'm from the Dominican Republic. I worked in a wide variety of settings, including a primary care physician, an ICU physician, and an emergency room physician. I also established my academic capabilities while working as a teaching assistant in the physiologic lab at my medical school. We performed experiments on dogs where we would introduce a femoral catheter directly to the dog's aorta and apply different medications to observe the changes in the cardiac monitor of the cardiovascular system parameters. Despite all this success, though, I felt my career was approaching a ceiling that I could only break through with the help of more advanced training. In addition, I knew I needed greater exposure to more state-of-the-art physician tools and methodologies, the likes of which I couldn't find in the Dominican Republic. This reality brought me to the United States, where I have undergone many diverse experiences familiarizing myself with the American healthcare system. My first job was as a medical assistant, which was a great way to ingrain myself in this new environment. I then transitioned to a more academic-focused career, spending a few years as a research coordinator, followed by clinical documentation improvement. Keeping my career going has been a challenge at times, but every struggle is an opportunity to grow and learn, and I am confident in the diverse skill set I have gained. Today, I am an internal medicine resident in Puerto Rico, with tremendous curiousness about Point-of-Care ultrasound. I am particularly interested in exploring the advents of machine learning technology in cardiovascular treatment. Eventually, I hope to bring my research talent and technological capacity back to Latin America.
