This session will provide a clinical and translational update on renin-angiotensin system (RAS) dysfunction and therapeutic approaches in critically ill patients. Content will span basic science to clinical trials in this emerging area of identified psychophysiology in critical illness. Speakers will review the scientific basis of the classical and nonclassical RAS pathways, known signaling pathways, and noted RAS disturbances and their associations with outcomes in critical illness. Disease-specific sessions will cover acute respiratory distress syndrome (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 data as therapeutic) and acute kidney injury (angiotensin 2 data), covering therapeutic (at times opposing) approaches to manipulate the RAS in critical illness.
