Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) has been established as an advanced therapeutic alternative for respiratory failure, cardiogenic shock, and failure to wean off cardiopulmonary bypass. With a global increase in expertise, other indications for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and other ECLS options have been explored. This session aims to increase understanding of future possibilities and indications for ECMO and ECLS toward improving individual outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and heart pumps in patients with adult congenital heart disease with special consideration of univentricular physiology
Describe the use of ECMO in obstetric care with special consideration of fetal monitoring and survival in the peripartum period
Describe long-term survival, neurodevelopmental, and quality-of-life outcomes in ECMO survivors
Define optimal surveillance and programmatic strategies for long-term follow-up
