Corticosteroids are commonly used and frequently debated in critical illness settings. This session will review our basic understanding of the range of corticosteroid effects pertinent to critical illness and will summarize evidence for the utility of corticosteroids for two common ICU syndromes: acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis.

Learning Objectives:

Summarize molecular mechanisms of corticosteroids resulting in clinical effects relevant to critically ill patients
Evaluate evidence for corticosteroid use in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), including when in the ARDS course to consider its use, whether there are differences in effect by drug, and consideration of downsides
Analyze evidence for corticosteroid use in sepsis, including which patients, particularly across sepsis severity, age, and comorbidities, are most likely to benefit, as well as which corticosteroid regimens are best proven
