Title: Obesity and COVID-19 a single center study
Introduction: Obesity is a public health problem in Mexico. Obesity has been reported with worse outcome in patients with COVID-19 infection.
In this study we evaluated patients admitted to our hospital with suspect of COVID-19 infection and describe their clinical characteristics including overweight, obesity, other comorbidities, and the mortality.
Methods: We include consecutive patients who were admitted to the COVID area from our Hospital in the period May 01 and June 30 2020, with suspect ofSARS-CoV-2. All patients were performed a PCR test to confirm diagnosis. We include all patients with a positive PCR result. All patients were measured and weighed by trained staff, to classify as normal weight, overweight or obesity according body mass index (BMI). All patients included were follow up to identify if they need mechanical ventilation during hospitalization, and until discharge from hospital. The statistical analysis use descriptive statistics.
Results: We admitted 56 patients during the study period, 13 patients were exclude because a negative RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2, and one more because missing data. We included 42 patient, Male 34(81%) female 8(19%), Normal weigh 9 (21.4%), 33 (78.6%) patients were overweight or obese. 16 (38.1%)patients overweight and Obese 17 (40.5%). Hypertension 15 (35%), type 2 diabetes 17 (40.4%) smoking 10 (23.8%). Patients who requiere mechanical ventilation were 8 (19%) 50% from this patients were overweight or obese. Hospital length was 11.2 days for all patients and 15.4 days for the patients with overweight and obesity. From the included patients 10 (23.8%) died, among this patients who died 6 (60%) were overweight and obese.
Conclusions: Overweight and obesity have a high frequency in COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital. Overweight and obese patients have a higher hospital length stay than patients with normal weight. Overweight and obesity is frequent in patients who required mechanical ventilation. Obesity and mortality is frequent in COVID-19 patients who died.
