Title: A Descriptive study of COVID-19 patients in Skill Nursing Facilities in United States from 50 States
Background: Large scale, multicenter studies reporting demographic and clinical characteristics of admitted patients in the skilled nursing facilities (SNF), and long terms outcomes are lacking and may help in formulating management recommendations.
Methods: In this multicenter study, retrospective data was recorded for patients admitted in multiple SNFs, in the United States. IRB was exempt and data was analyzed by using JMP 14.0 version
Results: A total of 204,928 patients, diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2020, were identified; 194,323 (99.3%) adult patients (age >18years) were included in this study. Of these), 115,416 (59%) were female. Most patients were white 133,701 (69%), 28,508 (15%) were black, 12,165 (6%) Hispanic and 3,504 (2%) were Asians. The average age was between 66-75 years (45,087 (23%)), followed by 65years or less 35,755 (18%). History of COVID-19 exposure was reported in 14,166 (7%) patients. History of Flu vaccine was reported in 98,609 (79%) patients. The most common signs and symptoms were fever (5,779 (3%)), shortness of breath (5,209 (3%)) and cough (4,869 (3%)). Hypertension (155,908 (80%)), Dyslipidemia/Hyperlipidemia (108,089 (56%)), Stroke/Other Neurological Disorders (101,466 (52%)), Depression (89,889 (46%)) and Diabetes mellitus (76,904 (40%)) were the most common comorbidities. The most common diagnoses were Pneumonia (44630 (23%)), and acute respiratory failure (11,447 (6%)). The average maximum heart rate was 80.8 (12.5) bpm, average lowest systolic, and corresponding diastolic blood pressure, was 122.5 (17.5) and 70.1 (21.3) mm Hg. The mean highest respiratory rate was 18.7 (±1.7) per minute, mean highest temperature was 98.3 (±1.4) degrees Ft and average lowest SpO2 was 94.1 (24.6) %. Within 30 days of admission, 19,594 (10.0%) patients died in SNF and 26,198 (13.5%) patients went to the hospital; 114,662 (59.0%) patients stayed in the SNF for at least 30 days.
