This session will describe problems with some of the most commonly used monitors in the ICU: pulse oximeter, arterial line, and pulmonary artery catheter. Recent evidence showing racial bias in pulse oximeter accuracy will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Explain why pulse oximeters produce inaccurate readings at low oxygen saturations and in patients with dark skin tones
Describe measurement problems with invasive arterial blood pressure monitoring and strategies for overcoming these problems
Describe limitations to the use of pulmonary artery catheter monitoring of pulmonary artery pressures and the measurement of continuous cardiac output
