Dr. Scott T. Benken is a clinical pharmacist in the medical ICU at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System in Chicago, Illinois, and a clinical associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy (UIC COP). Additionally, Dr. Benken is the Director of Clinical Research for the Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine - Division of Surgery and Co-director for the Critical Care and Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Fellowship within the UIC COP. He received his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati, James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Thereafter, Dr. Benken completed residencies in pharmacy practice and critical care at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System.
Dr. Benken’s clinical and research interests involve the optimization of medication therapy in critically ill patients as well as the exploration of medication regimens in unique critically ill patient subsets. This has led to extensive experience in a variety of research endeavors including in vitro studies, biomarker validation studies, clinical trials relating to critical care and transplant diagnostics, and pharmacokinetic analyses. He enjoys collaborative research endeavors as well as experiential teaching; he especially appreciates didactic classroom opportunities and is growing a research imperative surrounding pharmacy and interdisciplinary education. Dr. Benken is board certified in pharmacotherapy with added qualifications in Cardiology and a fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine.
