William S. Miles, MD,, FCCM graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia and a Medical Doctorate degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He completed a General Surgery Residency and a Research Fellowship at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He also completed additional fellowships at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Surgical Critical Care and Trauma Surgery, and subsequently in Surgical Education Research through the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Miles holds board certification in General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Neurological Critical Care and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American College of Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Miles joined the attending staff of F.H. "Sammy" Ross, Jr. Trauma Center at Carolinas Medical Center in 1995, where he is currently the Director of Surgical Critical Care Outreach, Co-Medical Director of the Neuro-Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Miles' interest and expertise in resident education earned him, "Attending of the Year" distinctions over several years of his tenure from the General Surgery residents
Dr. Miles has published three book Chapters, over 100 articles and abstracts on infections and trauma in the Journal of Trauma, Journal of Emergency Medicine, European Journal of Emergencies, and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Miles has presented over 100 in-services, posters, and scientific papers at national conferences. He is currently the Co- Historian for the Surgical Section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Miles has actively participated in several projects over the last decade in association with the Society of Critical Care Medicine and HRET/AHRQ on projects for the reduction of Catheter based infections in the ICU and improving the Culture of Patient Safety.
