Ann E. Thompson, MD, MCCM, MHCPM, is currently Vice Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and
Distinguished Service Professor of Critical Care Medicine. She was previously Associate Dean for Faculty and Medical Director for Clinical Resource Management at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She received her BS from the University of Chicago and MD from Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at Tufts New England Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, residency in anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania, and fellowship in pediatric critical care at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She completed a degree in Health Care Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University in 2003. From 1981-2010, she was director of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, building and maintaining a successful clinical and academic program, with one of the country’s most distinguished records in clinical outcome, research productivity, and fellowship training. She was a founding member of and chaired the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators Network from 2010-18, Vice President of WFPICCS 1998-2000, and is a past President of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, chair of the subboard of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (American Board of Pediatrics), and member of the RRC for Pediatrics of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Her awards incude the American Academy of Pediatrics Critical Care Section Distinguished Career Award, SCCM Barry A. Shapiro Memorial Award for Excellence in Critical Care Management, and the Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) National Leadership Award of the AAMC. She is currently actively engaged in teaching about unconscious bias in health care and critical steps toward mitigating its impact in medical education, professional development, and patient care.
