Sammy Zakaria, MD, MPH, FCCM, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Because he specializes in treating critically ill patients with cardiac diseases, he predominately works in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC) as well as the Cardiac Care Unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital. In his role as the Director of the CICU at JHBMC, he is most interested in quality improvement projects to improve ICU and hospital-based care as well as decreasing stress and discomfort experienced by patients, families, and staff. He is also researching the utility of echocardiography in the ICU, focusing on cardiovascular function in women with life-threatening preeclampsia. Finally, Dr. Zakaria most values his role as an educator for students, residents, fellows, and critical care practitioners. He is honored to be an Associate Program Director of the JHBMC Internal Medicine Residency, where he is able to help guide and advise a group of 52 residents; and as a Colleges Advisor, where he mentors and teaches a cohort of 24 medical students.
