Associate Professor
Texas Childrens Hospital
Houston, Texas
I am an Assistant Professor at Texas Children's Hospital, Baylor College, TX, USA in the Division of Critical Care Medicine for pediatric and adult cardiac intensive care unit. I am board certified in Anesthesiology (2004) and Intensive Care (2009) by the Medical Association of Bavaria, Germany, accredited as Fellow in Pediatric Intensive Care by the College of Intensive Care, Australia (2013), and certified as Specialist in Pediatrics by the Texas Medical Board, USA (2015).
I am a passionate clinical researcher and clinician with a strong focus in Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) technologies including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ventricular assist devices (VADs). In order to disseminate knowledge and help others achieve their goals, I have harnessed both traditional methods as well as the power of social media, internet-based applications and streaming. I have facilitated regular didactic teaching sessions during each of my faculty roles in Germany, Australia as well as now at Texas Children’s Hospital. I developed and lead the bimonthly Mechanical Support (MCS) Meeting at Texas Children's Hospital, which is an internationally streamed clinical resource for discussion of the application of ELCS for patients with advanced respiratory and/or cardiovascular failure. Additionally, I created and regularly update an open source, online guideline for evidence and experience-based congenital cardiac intensive care, “Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Guideline” (www.picudoctor.org).
As a dedicated clinician researcher, I have extended mentorship in clinical care and research to more than 30 mentees to foster their growth within research as they advance careers during my tenure at Texas Children’s Hospital. I have expertly guided mentees through hypothesis generation, statistical analysis, and manuscript drafting, resulting in over 40 publications in abstracts, peer-reviewed medical journals and book chapters.
