Associate Professor of Medicine
Baylor College of Medicine
Houston, Texas
I am board certified in both adult and pediatric critical care medicine and have been on faculty teaching and practicing both specialties since 2008, initially at the University of Miami, then a decade at the University of Pittsburgh and now at the Baylor College of Medicine. I have a long track record of translational research aimed at protecting the heart and brain from global ischemic injury, such as that seen clinically in cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary bypass. I have engaged in lab-based experimentation and phase 1 and 2 randomized placebo controlled interventional clinical trials. I have been active in education, directing or co-directing fellowship training in cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology/mechanical ventilation, journal club/evidence-based medicine, a medical school resuscitation track and an American Heart Association funded undergraduate research program.
Since August 2020, I moved to Houston to become the Directror of Inpatient Services (critical and acute care) at Texas Children’s Hospital’s unique and innovative adult congenital heart unit. Here I have helped trained faculty from adult and pediatric backgrounds in caring for patients with adult congenital heart disease. Our unit is the first of its kind medical and surgical acuity adaptable ICU/acute care ward devoted to the care of adults with congenital heart disease and pregnant/peri-partum patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
