Dr. Tolwani is Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and holder of the Edwin A. Rutsky Endowed Chair. She holds a Master’s of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed a combined nephrology and critical care fellowship at UAB and stayed on as faculty. She was the Nephrology Fellowship Training Program Director from 2004-2010 and is now an Associate Program Director. She is also the Director for ICU Nephrology at UAB. Dr. Tolwani is the founder and Director of UAB Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) Academy where she oversees every aspect of the program including development, organization and implementation of the curriculum. This two-day course has been offered every year at UAB since 2007 and has been the only national CRRT training course that offers in-depth training with simulation as well as a pre and post examination. She also conducts CRRT training workshops internationally. Her dedication and quality has resulted in her receiving numerous institutional awards, including the UAB Argus Medical Student Award for Excellence in Teaching on multiple occasions, the UAB Department of Medicine Top Ten Teacher award and the UAB Department of Medicine Education Excellence Award yearly. In 2016, she was honored with the President's Award for teaching which recognizes the best teacher in the U AB School of Medicine. In 2020, she was honored with the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Robert G. Narins Award (Lifetime Teaching Award in Education). Her research interests include acute kidney injury, ICU nephrology, and CRRT, with a focus on citrate anticoagulation. She has a patent on the 0.5% citrate solution which is available in numerous countries.
