Paul Wischmeyer, MD, EDIC, FASPEN, FCCM, is an ICU physician and internationally recognized expert in ICU nutrition at Duke University. He practices as a critical care, perioperative and nutrition physician who serves as a Professor with Tenure of Anesthesiology and Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. He also serves as the Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Research in the Dept. of Anesthesiology and Director of the Nutrition Team at Duke Hospital. Dr. Wischmeyer’s clinical and research focus is in perioperative care, nutrition, and critical care to help patients prepare and recover from ICU and surgery. His research interests include nutrition therapy, indirect calorimetry, pre-/post-illness muscle mass, functional recovery and cognition, role of probiotics/microbiome in illness, and he is specifically examines these questions in trials in COVID-19 prevention and treatment;
Dr. Wischmeyer has >200 publications with an H-index of 63 (44 papers with >100 citations), including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international medical meetings, delivering >800 invited presentations. His unique expertise lies in utilizing innovative and integrative interventions, such as nutrition and exercise to improve patients’ lives before and after illness. His belief is medicine has improved in treating disease, but physicians must now ensure they restore patients’ quality of life, so they are creating survivors, not victims, with their care. His passion for helping patients recover from illness arises from his personal experiences as both doctor and patient. Since childhood, he has undergone numerous surgeries and personally experienced multiple hospital/ICU stays due to a childhood inflammatory bowel disease that took a much of his intestinal tract. His personal experiences have made preparation and recovery from illness and family-centered ICU care a personal way of life he is passionate about teaching patients and other caregivers worldwide.
