Anthony Martinez ,MD St. Agnes
As founder and former Director of the Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU) I have been committed to the development of delivery care models that will enhance equity of care and patient centered outcomes of seriously ill patients. During my tenure as director, the staff of Surgical and Medical ICU were combined into the present day AICU. Under my leadership the AICU was the first community hospital in Baltimore to have a closed ICU and have a modern unit built in 1995-96. Outcome data of this AICU has been collected since its inception.
Subsequently, the first METS team and blood management center was established in the mid-Atlantic region. During the ensuing decade there has been a stepwise focus on the development of efficiency in daily critical care operations of patient flow from PACU, ED or floor into the AICU , effective Lab ,diagnostic imaging and resource utilization and rapid test results for modifiable interventions. This has led to standardized daily operations such as twice daily board rounds, numerous patient safety initiatives, transfusion practices and early mobility that are reviewed on a weekly basis and reported Quarterly.
Now retired from clinical practice, I have harnessed my clinical experience into the field of implementation and data science to enhance the Quality Improvement program that links process care adherence to meaningful patient centered outcomes.
Through these initiatives and the increased representation of frontline clinicians from community hospital in research will equity in health care be achieved. Thus, my commitment to support community hospitals research initiatives at SCCM Discovery remains unwavering. This has included participation in the development of SCCM Discovery as an original steering committee member and involvement in successful Discovery projects such as: CIOS, US Prep, SAGE , Volume Chaser ,COVID VIRUS registry and Stop Virus ICU Learning.
