Marilyn Hravnak RN, PhD, FAAN, MCCM is a Professor Emeritus as of 1/1/2021, and prior to retirement served as a tenured professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, in the Acute and Tertiary Care Department. In retirement she maintains an active co-investigator role on several research projects. She had an active program of NIH funded research in cardiovascular acute and critical care, most recently examining prediction models for cardiorespiratory instability in continuously monitored hospitalized patients in order to assist nurses in identifying unstable patients earlier or, ideally, applying preemptive interventions, and decrease alarm fatigue. She has more than 45 years of critical care nursing experience at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, including over 35 years at the advanced practice nursing level. Among her honors and awards was her induction as a Master of Critical Care Medicine in the American College of Critical Care Medicine, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She is a past recipient of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Norma J. Shoemaker Award for Excellence in Critical Care Nursing and has in past served as both Chair of the Nursing Section and Chair of the Research Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
