Dr. Sheila Alexander is an Associate Professor of Nursing and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. She is an active member of SCCM, serving on many committees, as well as being a previous chair of the Research Section , immediate past- chair of the Nursing Section and chair-elect of The Discovery Network. She spent many years as a nurse in the neurosurgical ICU before moving into an academic career. She completed her doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh and a Summer Genetics Institute fellowship at the National Institute for Nursing Research. She currently has a line of research exploring biomarkers of brain response to acute illness and injury, including ICU delirium and secondary injury after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Her work has been funded by the National Institute for Nursing Research and the National Institute for Aging, National Institutes of Health, the American Nurses Foundation, Neuroscience Nursing Foundation, and she was a past recipient of both the Norma J. Shoemaker Research Award and the SCCM-Weill Research Grant. She has published broadly on topics related to genetic, epigenetic, genomic and other omic biomarkers of brain response to injury and nursing research, contributed chapters to several textbooks and served as editor of a textbook on evidence based nursing care of cerebrovascular disorders.
