Dr. Miano is a Critical Care Pharmacist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and an Instructor of Epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine. He received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, completed post-graduate pharmacy residency at Wake Forest University Medical Center, and received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and an Associate Editor of BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology.
Dr. Miano’s research leverages electronic health record data to study drug safety and comparative effectiveness in the critically ill population. His work seeks to understand drug effect heterogeneity and quantify the impacts of variable response on outcomes. Areas of emphasis include drug associated acute kidney injury and drug-drug interactions. He has received federal funding to support his work, which has produced over 40 peer reviewed publications. Dr. Miano also has extensive experience teaching critical care pharmacotherapy and research methodology. In addition to giving numerous invited lectures on these topics, he leads a graduate level course on biostatistical methods to address confounding and coordinates a course in research methods for the FDA’s Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology.
