Barbara McLean has been in critical care practice for 40 years. Currently, Barbara is the advancing evidence-based practice clinical specialist for the division of critical care at the Grady Health System; Atlanta GA. Ms. McLean is a member of many professional organizations including the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and the American Association of Surgery and Trauma. She has been awarded the excellence in education award by the AACN as well as the circle of excellence for clinical practice in 2014 and the SCCM has presented her with the prestigious Norma J. Shoemaker Award for critical care nursing excellence in 2013. She also received the clinical excellence award in 2014 from Grady Hospital, her home environment. In 2017, she was the first nurse ever to receive the Joseph A. Brown award from the society of Critical Care Medicine for her contributions to critical care practice. Since 1994, Barbara became the first nurse, then first voted nurse lecturer and course director for the fundamentals in critical care support program. Her history of team building through education and communication has become a regular event at Grady Health. In 2021, she was welcomed into the emergency critical care service at Grady and for the last year and a half has been a vital participant in developing increasing awareness, knowledge, and management of critical patients in the emergency department. Her days are spent evolving knowledge, consulting on patients, supporting staff and improving communication.
