Lucas is a Brazilian scientist with remarkable credentials and major contributions to the advancement of data science and engineering for health. In Brazil, he was a key figure in structuring the data & analytics division at Albert Einstein, since recognized as the best hospital in Latin America and one of the best in the world. There, he was also co-responsible for the creation of the first hospital-wide research database in Latin America. In the U.S., he started and contributed to global efforts, with a special drive for open science, which include a pivotal role in the creation of publicly available resources, such as the MIMIC database and the web repository PhysioNet, both imperative for the work of tens of thousands of scientists worldwide.
Lucas also continuously works in the dissemination of knowledge, transparency and best practices in healthcare data and research. He co-authored a range of educational materials such as peer-reviewed content, massive open online courses, book chapters, and open-source software. He has also organized, mentored, and been featured as a speaker in graduate-level courses, conferences, symposiums, and datathons. Throughout his career, he established and lead inter-institutional and disciplinary collaborations spawning numerous projects and a network of colleagues that span across the four major continents, directly contributing to the inclusive progress of healthcare in the information age.
Currently, Lucas' work involves bringing together the technologies and knowledge he has helped conceive towards improving the manner therapies are delivered – including to those with the most severe illnesses and syndromes – through research at Endpoint Health.
