My name is Zasha F. Vazquez Colon, MD. I am a pediatric critical care fellow at the University of Florida in Gainesville. I completed my doctorate in medicine at the Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamon, Puerto Rico in 2014. After a transitional residency year and working as pediatric surgery house staff I decided to pursue training in pediatrics with the goal of becoming a pediatric intensivist. I completed my pediatrics residency at the San Juan City Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico. During my training I had the opportunity to work with critically ill patient management in the Pediatric University Hospital while also having training in the outpatient setting, providing the foundation to become a well-rounded pediatrician. During residency I had the opportunity to do clinical research related to thromboembolic events in the cardiac intensive care unit, chemical burns, and toxic ingestions in the pediatric population. I was awarded the Minority Trainee Development Scholarship during my residency to present my research project in the American Thoracic Society Annual Conference in May 2019. Since July 2019 I have been training in pediatric critical care medicine, where I have had the opportunity to work with critically ill patients in the general pediatric ICU and in the pediatric cardiac ICU. My current research interests are in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and I was awarded an ELSO Research grant for my current project.
