Curtis N. Sessler, MD is the Orhan Muren Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health System in Richmond, Virginia where he is Associate Chair for Faculty Development for the Department of Internal Medicine as well as Medical Director of Critical Care, and Director of the Center for Adult Critical Care. Dr. Sessler has focused on clinical, educational, and clinical research in the ICU setting. He has been active in SCCM and the Critical Care Societies Collaborative (CCSC) participated in numerous task forces, including those focused on ICU burnout, ICU sedation and analgesia, liberation from mechanical ventilation, critical care research, ICU workforce, and Choosing Wisely in critical care. He is past-President of the American College of Chest Physicians and past editor-in-chief of the CHEST Critical Care SEEK textbook. Dr. Sessler and his team created the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS).
