Personal Statement: During the course of my career I have gained in-depth knowledge in mitochondrial physiology, mitochondrial medicine and pre-clinical drug development. My research focuses on investigating new strategies to evaluate drug toxicity and develop pharmacologicalprotection of mitochondria, the cell’s power house. This interest in mitochondrial medicine was sparked during my PhD at Lund University, Lund, Sweden, in the laboratory of Associate Professor Eskil Elmér, where I developed in vitro and ex vivo methods to assess mitochondrial function following exposure to drugs and evaluated pharmacological treatment strategies in the established models. In the course of this work I have primarily worked with human peripheral blood cells and have developed to one of the lead scientists in this field of mitochondrial research. In Dr. Todd Kilbaugh’s laboratory at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia I have applied this knowledge and successfully established different in vitro and in vivo models of chemical exposure and assessed the treatment capabilities of cell permeable succinate prodrugs in these models, a novel mitochondrial targeted treatment strategy. Throughout my academic career I further have worked part time in the pharmaceutical industry and have gained experience in both quality control and preclinical drug development. My experience in both academia and pharmaceutical industry has demonstrated to me the need for a comprehensive drug development platform to advance effective therapeutic treatments with rapid translation into clinical practice.
