José L. Díaz-Gómez is the Director of Cardiothoracic, Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Transplant Critical Care as well as the Director of Critical Care Echocardiography at The Texas Heart Institute within Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Díaz-Gómez completed his medical training at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, Colombia, and a post-graduate anesthesiology residency at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He then completed a critical care fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He also pursued further training in cardiac anesthesia at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, with added qualifications in neurocritical care (United Council of Neurological Specialties), and the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) - Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography and Critical Care Echocardiography. He holds the Fellowship in the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM) and the Fellowship in the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE).
Dr. Díaz-Gómez's research contributions include over 60 peer-reviewed publications in critical care medicine and ultrasonography; an edited book in Critical Care Ultrasonography. His initial investigations on critical care ultrasonography's education highlighted the interdisciplinary and multi-professional application of this tool in critical care practice. He propose alternative techniques in advanced critical care ultrasonography for specific patient populations such as pulmonary hypertension and mechanical circulatory support.
Dr. Díaz-Gómez’s contributions to the SCCM include continuous improvement of all educational products related to critical care ultrasound alongside mentoring junior faculty who have to join the ultrasound courses and ultrasound committees over the last decade. In addition to these achievements, he represents the SCCM at the Critical Care Echocardiography, National Board Exam – writing committee, and, more recently, the American Society of Echocardiography Collaborative Workgroup. He was the 2021 Annual Congress (50th anniversary) Co-chair and currently he is the Anesthesia-designated Seat within SCCM Council.
