Dr. Kathleen To is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, R Adam Cowley Shock Trauma Center. She is also the Section Chief for Surgical Critical Care at the Baltimore VA Medical Center and the Director for Critical Care Response to COVID in the VA Maryland Health Care System. She received her medical degree from Duke University, completed General Surgery residency at Loma Linda University, then did Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery fellowships at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. To is board certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. She was a member of the faculty in Trauma, Burn, Critical Care and Emergency Surgery at the University of Michigan. In 2017, she accepted her current positions at the University of Maryland / Shock Trauma and Baltimore VAMC. Dr. To’s clinical and academic interests are in emergency suergery, critical care, models of care, patient outcomes, patient safety and process improvement. She was the inaugural recipient of the American College of Surgeons Thomas R Russell MD FACS Faculty Research Fellowship for her work on Emergency General Surgery Models of Care. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a newly inducted Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. She has been active in the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), and the Surgical Infections Society (SIS). Within SCCM, she was the chair of the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee, was an inaugural member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and just completed a 3-year term as chair of the Surgery Section Patient Safety Committee. She will be Secretary-Treasurer for the SCCM Surgery Section beginning at Congress 2021.
