As a double-boarded General and Vascular Surgeon with also a Master’s Degree in Clinical Epidemiology, and having recently completed Surgical Critical Care training, I believe I am particularly well suited to collaborate on this project with Dr. Montgomery. Having been in practice as a Vascular Surgeon for nearly two years prior to starting my Critical Care Fellowship, I have first-hand experience with the evaluation and management of patients with vascular disease. As such, this affords me a unique understanding of vascular physiology and pathophysiology as well as of important factors to consider when interpreting non-invasive vascular imaging. This knowledge additionally allows me to address the limitations of such imaging in patients with either risk factors for or known vascular disease in whom arterial and/or venous waveforms will be abnormal at baseline. As an Intensivist, I also take care of surgical patients in shock on a daily basis, and am therefore acutely aware of the critical importance of appropriate and targeted fluid resuscitation and management. This expertise in Vascular Surgery, Vascular Imaging, and Surgical Critical Care makes me uniquely qualified to bridge the gap between these two fields. Beyond hands-on image acquisition and clinical evaluation of patients, I will contribute a more sophisticated and nuanced interpretation of Doppler ultrasound that will have the potential to lead to a more appropriate and effective implementation of this technology in critically ill surgical and trauma patients in shock. Lastly, my track record of federal and regional funding as a General Surgery resident is a testimony to my ability to complete high-quality grant-worthy research work. In the long-term, my academic goal is to utilize my knowledge and understanding of vascular physiology and my skills to respectively develop applications that benefit critically ill surgical patients and to teach surgical trainees basic endovascular techniques.
