Dr. A. Tyler Putnam II is the Medical Director of the Surgical ICU at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield Massachusetts, and Program Director for Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowships at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Putnam earned his MD at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas and a fellowship in surgical critical care and traumatology at the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center. From 1981-2006, Dr. Putnam served as a commissioned officer with the US Air Force, retiring at the rank of Colonel in 2006.
Dr. Putnam is a leader in international surgical and critical care education and has developed and implemented training programs that have been brought to over 65 countries through the US State and Defense Departments. Dr. Putnam served as Chief of General, Trauma and Specialty Surgery at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. Dr. Putnam was recognized as the Air Force Physician of the Year in 2001 for his contributions to medical education, training and clinical readiness.
Since retiring from the Air Force, he has served as the Director of Surgical Critical Care and Section Chief, Critical Care Surgery at the Carilion Clinic and was a founding faculty at the Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, Virginia and then Acute Care Surgery Division Chief at Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee. He has been active on academic faculty throughout his career teaching residents, medical and health students in general surgery, trauma and critical care. Dr. Putnam maintains dual board certification from the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care/Trauma and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Critical Care Medicine.
