Lt Col (Dr.) Stermole is the Chief of Infectious Disease at the 96th Medical Group, located at Eglin Air Force Base, FL. He serves as Chair of Infection Control and Medical Director for Antimicrobial Stewardship and provides specialty support to DOD installations throughout the Defense Health Agency Florida Panhandle Market. He has served as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force since 2002, earning his degree in Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie, PA, with funding through the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). He completed Residency in Internal Medicine at Wright State University while stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB and Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) in San Antonio, TX. Since 2014, he has provided critical expertise in the development, testing, and implementation of biocontainment transport systems including the Transport Isolation System (TIS) and the Negative Pressure CONEX (NPC), first developed in response to the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak and later put to use in evacuating patients of all levels of acuity from deployed locations during the COVID-19 pandemic. His efforts have been rewarded with the Humanitarian Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal, and led to the 96th Medical Group's receipt of the USAF Medical Service Outstanding Achievement in Innovation Award.
