Professor and Endowed Chair at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Departments of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. President-elect for 2024, served as co-chair of the 43rd Critical Care Congress January 2014 in San Francisco. Council lead for the SCCM THRIVE initiative, Board of Directors of the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS), president of the Citizen CPR Foundation, and founding director for the CHOP Academy for Resuscitation of Children, Center for Pediatric Resuscitation and the CHOP Center for Simulation, Advanced Education and Innovation. Served as chair of the American Heart Association’s Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee and executive committee of ILCOR, the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (2007-2022). Founding member of the American Heart Association’s National Registry of CPR (Get with the Guidelines-Resuscitation), the AHRQ funded National Emergency Airway Registry for Children (NEAR-4-KIDS), the International Network for Simulation-Based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education (INSPIRE) and the Pedi-RES-Q learning “co-laboratory”. He is the leader of the emerging Global Resuscitation Alliance for Resuscitation of children.
Authored >700 peer-reviewed manuscripts related to critical care and resuscitation science. Has an H-index of 113, with >123,000 citations and an i-10 index of 439. Has mentored >140 clinician-scientists, culminating in recognition by the SCCM Asmund S. Laerdal Award, American Academy of Pediatrics Critical Care Lifetime Distinguished Career Award, the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Giant’s award, the American Heart Association Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Citizen CPR Foundation Hans Dahll Award.
For >30 years, he has “paid it forward”, volunteering with Operation Smile International. Over the past 5 years he has mentored the development of the PediSTARS (Pediatric Simulation Training and Research Society), and the birth of the ABC-Active Bleeding Control-Stop the Bleed program in India.
