Smith Heavner, PhD, RN, is Senior Scientific Director of the Critical Path Institute’s CURE Drug Repurposing Collaboratory, a public-private partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in partnership with the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and currently leads a $10 million project to advance tools for extracting RWD from the EHR and previously led automated data extraction efforts for the VIRUS COVID-19 Registry. Dr. Heavner is associate professor of evaluation science at Clemson University and an active member of the OHDSI community. He is a registered nurse specialized in critical care and doctorally trained in evaluation and implementation science with five years experience leading interdisciplinary teams. Dr. Heavner works closely with FDA and NCATS partners to advance the use of RWD and RWE for drug repurposing research.
