This session will cover the most pertinent topics related to managing organ donors, including pronouncing brain death, laws governing the process of managing organ donors and authorization for organ donation, and review of catastrophic brain injury guidelines.

Learning Objectives:

Detail catastrophic brain injury guidelines and their impact on severely brain-injured organ donors
Review current law and prominent ethical issues relevant to organ donors (Uniform Declaration of Death Act, Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, states with death exemptions)
List best practices and the process for declaration of brain death and how the brain-dead donation process works and discuss the new American Academy of Neurology guidelines expected to be developed in one to two years
Describe traditional organ donation (brain-dead donors) and donation after cardiac death and compare and contrast the impact of donor type on transplantation outcomes
