Trauma-related hemorrhage remains one of the world’s leading causes of death. Resuscitation often manages coagulopathy empirically, is nonspecific, and does not correct a preexisting coagulopathy. Advances in our understanding of trauma-induced coagulopathy and new approaches to resuscitation have led to large improvements in outcomes. Viscoelastic assays, such as thrombelastography and rotational thrombelastometry, have emerged as point-of-care tools that can guide the hemostatic resuscitation of bleeding trauma patients. These tools may not be familiar to all trauma practitioners. This session will cover unique advances in trauma care, including viscoelastic assays to diagnose hemostatic deficiencies and guide coagulation support, platelet function tests to help tailor hemostatic support, and optimization of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in trauma patients.
