Military medical teams uniquely must be able to manage the transport of critically ill patients, regardless of the nature of their illness, over great distances to receive definitive care. These teams must be able to deploy at a moment's notice and care for patients with complex polytrauma, acute respiratory failure, highly infectious diseases, and possibly children as well as adults. This session will review the capabilities and experiences of the U.S. military's critical care air transport (CCAT) teams, as well as lessons from their work that may be broadly applicable to "earthbound" critical care.
