Twenty-five percent of acute care hospitals are classified as critical access hospitals that are often staffed by hospitalists and family practitioners. Critically ill patients are triaged, stabilized, and often transferred to higher levels of care. It is essential to ensure that these clinicians are well trained to care for critically ill patients.

Learning Objectives:

Compare team-based emergency care at rural and urban hospitals
Describe nursing issues in rural settings and the required breadth and depth of skills needed to recognize, stabilize, and transfer patients who require a higher level of care
Discuss the role of the critical access hospital pharmacist as part of the hospital team
Describe factors that influence the availability of critical care medication availability in critical access hospitals
Discuss the importance of how clinician experience, expertise, and resource limitations must be mitigated in rural critical care
