This session will discuss pertinent but often overlooked aspects of obesity that affect critically ill patients. Beginning with basic science implications, speakers will move through a discussion of appropriate nutrition, the physiologic affects of obesity on illness and recovery, and the implications for treatment of disease with pharmacotherapy.

Learning Objectives:

Describe underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms in obesity that contribute to complications in critical illness
Implement a plan of care for critically ill obese patients to minimize the effect of body habitus on development of organ dysfunction
Develop a nutrition support plan for critically ill obese patients
Describe potential medication choice and dosage adjustments necessary for critically ill obese patients
