The U.S. population of adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) was estimated at 1.4 million in 2010 and is growing rapidly thanks to our success in caring for this population during childhood. Approximately 85,000 women with severe CHD and as many as 200,000 with complex CHD are of childbearing age. For these patients, pregnancy may result in critical illness or death. This session will cover how to approach these patients and their critical management during pregnancy and as they enter the high-risk peripartum period.

Learning Objectives:

Identify the major risks posed by pregnancy to patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD)
Identify strategies to minimize the risk of morbidity and mortality to patients with ACHD in the peripartum period
Describe critical care management and optimal pharmacotherapy for pregnant patients with ACHD
